CHAPTER 14

After closing the bakery, I rode down to the Glenwood Falls police station with Max in the back of my car. Mary Kate was at the front desk, as usual.

“Hey, Mary Kate,” I said hesitantly as Max and I approached the desk. I never knew whether I was going to get her good side or her bad side.

“Dogs aren’t allowed in here,” she said, looking at Max with an expression that could wither the strongest of personalities. Max whimpered and hid behind my legs.

“Rey said it’s fine. Even Sheriff Briggs doesn’t mind,” I replied, reminding her of a conversation we’d had weeks ago. They knew I had my dog with me almost all the time, so if I needed to talk with them and had Max at my side, so be it.

Mary Kate rolled her eyes. “Deputy Beltran isn’t here,” she said. “He’s out for lunch. And it’s with a woman.” She waited for my reaction.

A woman? Who would Rey be out to lunch with? I tried to squash the feeling of jealousy rising in the pit of my stomach, especially because I knew this was exactly the reaction Mary Kate wanted me to have.

“Oh, yeah, I know he gets lunch with the other deputies every now and then,” I said, dismissing her insinuations.

“She wasn’t a deputy,” Mary Kate immediately shot back, then opened her eyes wide and innocently. Determined not to let her get to me, I brushed off the comment.

“I guess I’ll need to talk to Sheriff Briggs then.”

Mary Kate called the Sheriff on his desk phone and then pointed me toward his office. “That way.”

“Thanks, Mary Kate,” I said sweetly. Max and I passed her desk with our heads held high. Once I was out of her line of sight, I paused for a moment. Who was the woman Rey was eating lunch with? Why hadn’t he mentioned it to me? Normally, he texted me on his lunch break, even if it was a quick hello and an update on his day.

I wasn’t the type to get overly jealous, and my gut told me there was a perfectly innocent explanation. After all, he had the right to share his lunch hour with anyone he wanted. Still, there was a nagging feeling that he was keeping something from me.

But now was not the time to worry about it. Sheriff Briggs waved me into his office, and I sat on the faded leather chair across from his desk.

“Ms. Harrington,” he said, nodding at me. His eyes flickered to Max, and he gave the slightest nod to him. Slowly but surely, I think Max may have been finally earning a little respect from the Sheriff.

“Sheriff, I’ve told you a dozen times. Call me Sophie. I don’t need any formalities,” I protested.

Sheriff Briggs pretended not to hear. “What can I do for you today? Please tell me you haven’t found another dead body.” Although I knew he was mostly joking, I saw a hint of hesitation in his eyes, as if he feared I really had uncovered another crime.
